Ballencrieff Rare Pedigree Pigs
Award Winning Ballencrieff
The good old-fashioned taste of Ballencrieff Rare Pedigree Pigs has at last been recognised and has received not one, not two but three awards for Great Taste.
Peter and Elma McLaren, rear old fashioned pigs in the old fashioned way – outdoors, fed on natural feed with no growth promoters, no antibiotics and no GM produce – the result, well fed, happy pigs which produce the tastiest products. A taste, which has been recognised by The Guild of Fine Food Retailers. A national award, which attracts entries from over 4500 producers. The only judging criteria is exquisite taste and every entry is blind tasted by teams of experts whose single aim is to identify those foods, worthy of the coveted Gold, Silver and Bronze awards.
Ballencrieff Rare Pedigree Pigs achieved gold awards for their smoked and unsmoked back bacon and silver for their premium pork sausage. Peter and Elma are delighted ‘you can’t beat the meat and flavour from these old breeds for taste’ commented Peter who started off with two Berkshires in 1989 and now has 60 sows all rare breed – Berkshire, Gloucester Old Spot and Saddleback. ‘Berkshire has a brilliant flavour for pork. The Gloucestershire Old Spot, with its large clearly defined spots, has a broad and deep body and large hams. British Saddlebacks are known for their grazing ability and their hardiness’ continued Peter.
