“Fine Scottish, artisanal cheese made from our own family recipes using unpasteurised milk and hand crafted using traditional methods from our creamery in the heart of Aberdeenshire. Our recipes haven't changes in 50 years nor has the way we make our cheese. Pure, unadulterated, unpasteurised goodness. Made with love to be consumed with passion.

Cambus O’May - hand pressed 2 day curd cheese melts in your mouth with a finishcouriercambus.jpg that leaves you dreaming of days gone by. Strong and creamy, the flagship cheese is nutty and flavoursome. This is the first authentic reproduction of this cheese since the 70′s based on Barbara Reid’s traditional farmhouse recipe.

Lairig Ghru - an old fashioned cheese with an old fashioned flavour. A moist crumbly texture with a pleasant tang and full finish. Those that have trekked this ancient mountain pass will associate with the crumbly and long finish notes!

Lochnagar - the creamy texture mimics the smooth Western slopes of the mountain; sharp acidity and after taste reflect the jagged edge of the Eastern cliffs of Lochnagar!

Auld Lochnagar - an age-old family recipe almost as old as the mountain itself. The ancient art of cheese-making was as much about maturing as it was about the process. Alex, too, believes in allowing a cheese to mature fully. Auld Lochnagar is a perfect example as it gently matures up to 12 months for the full depth of flavour to develop.

Auld Reekie - carefully developed to combine the flavours and textures of traditional cheese with a delicate wood and whisky finish using local traditional smoking methods.

2015 Food Secretary Richard Lochhead launched a bid for Cambus O’May cheese to be granted Protected Food Name (PFN) status.

All their cheeses have distinctive aromatic flavours to appreciate. You will find them at local farmer's markets.

This family of farmhouse artisan cheesemakers use their own dairy herds and traditional methods to produce award-winning unpasteurized Traditional Isle of Mull, and Hebridean Blue cheeses, along with Cloth Bound Tobermory Truckles and naturally flavoured wax coated Isle of Mull Flavells.

In 1979, Jeff and Chris Reade moved to the then derelict Sgriob-ruadh Farm.cheese_labels_mull.jpg Together with their four sons and driven by their own enterprise, ingenuity, skill, and hard work, they built a working farm with cow housing, milking parlour, cheesemaking room and cellars. Chris, Garth, Brendan and Shelagh continue to cultivate Isle of Mull cheese today and the 3rd generation is in training! The family is proud to be one of the island’s largest employers. The dairy, bakery and houses are powered by a hydroelectric plant, wind turbine and log burners.
Folk staying in the farm's holiday cottages can enjoy their indoor swimming pool,  heated with reclaimed heat from cooling the evening milk down and the air conditioning equipment used in the dairy!

iomc_baord2Cheese produced from raw milk has many layers of flavours and they endeavour to preserve the natural flora found in the milk (the terroir) by milking directly into the cheese vat. A truly sustainable and holistic way to produce cheese.

Summers are short on the island, so the herd are housed in large sheds over winter, to protect them from the wild island weather. They are fed a balanced diet of hay, silage and draff, from the distillery in Tobermory a mile or so away. Summers are wonderful, bright and fresh with long days. The cows graze on rich organic grass.

Over the years the cheese has matured with flavours that range from sweet andiomc_cafe.jpg boozy to rich, savoury, and mellow.

The dairy, close by the island's delightfully colourful principal town of Tobermory, also has a farm shop, beautiful cafe and ceramics. Their fine reputation means the cheeses can be found on many excellent specialist cheese counters, so please ask for them!

auchenice2Auchentullich is a 5th generation dairy farm on the banks of Loch Lomond, selling fine Highland beef, all sorts of local produce, a wee cafe AND NOW THEIR OWN ICE CREAM!

Before pasteurising laws came into place they bottled and sold milk on a milk round. When the laws changed times moved on however now they are trying to go back to their farm roots. They pasteurise their milk and don’t homogenise so you will get the cream on the top Mmmm.

They bottle the milk on the farm daily. As well as bottling they now make ice cream, again as traditional as can be, on the farm daily. Using a very traditional recipe, they use their own whole milk from their cows, from cow to cone.

They have multiple flavours from Plain Jane and Vanilla to Seabuckthorn/ Bramble/auchenice4 Pistachio to name a few using the best of ingredients and fellow local producers to make flavourings such as Crystals Shortbread or Auchentoshan Three Wood Malt Whisky. It’s a real family affair, everything is done by the family on the farm.

A delicious traditional dairy ice cream. Unlike most processed milk from large dairy plants, this milk has not been homogenised. It still has an old-fashioned 'cream line' so the milk retains its creamy taste. Local cattle grazing on the southern island pastures produce the milk for this orange of ice creams. Created in small batches in tasty flavours reflecting other island produce. No e mail at present so please telephone instead.

Humphrey Errington started making sheep's cheese on his family run farm in the 80's and is justly renowned for the famous ewe's milk Lanark Blue, and White. His daughter Selina now runs the cheese-making business and introduced Corra Linn, a hard sheep’s cheese matured for 6 – 10 months.

Lanark Blue is the famous, Scottish mould ripened ewes’ milk cheese, sometimes described as “Scotland’s Roquefort.”

“All our cheese is handmade in our farmhouse creamery from unpasteurized milk. Ourerr2
sheep graze hillsides 1000ft above sea level, overlooking the valley of the upper Clyde.”

They also produce Dunsyre Blue and Maisie’s Kebbuck, a white cheese, both from the cow’s milk, from the somewhat rarer British Fresian herd on Jim Struthers' Auchmeden Farm.

Their small team of staff have been with them many years and many restaurants have proudly served this cheese on their cheeseboards almost since Humphrey began, he has such a loyal following.

Recently they have decided to focus on their dairy training courses whilst opening the shop in the pretty crofting village of Achmore on a limited basis for the sale of ice cream and other dairy products made by students. Students may also make arrangements to bring their own milk supply.

The excellent range of cheeses they teach students include: Craig Mhaol, Coulommier, Crowdie and Blue - along with world class crème fraiche, ice cream and yoghurt. One of their delicious ice creams is with Isle of Skye Fudge - a nice highland connection. They also stock local honey and oatcakes. Look out for their sign in the village.

  • Clerkland Crowdie - A soft fresh cows’ milk cheese. Fresh as in not ripened so it is ready to eat as soon as it is made. This is an excellent example of traditional farmhouse crowdie and the only one in Scotland made with Ayrshire cows. They also do this cheese from goats milk but it doesn’t have a name so is sold as goat curd.
  • Paddy’s Milestone & Ailsa Craig - These are made from cows’ milk and goats’ milk respectively. They are named after the famous rock in the Firth of Clyde because they resemble the shape of Ailsa Craig.
  • Some cheeses may be unpasteurised so please check range at time of purchase

Ann's Traditional Scottish Crowdie & Dunlop are on Slow Food's Ark of Taste.

“In 1989 we started milking a small flock of Friesland sheep, and in 1990 started producing our organic “Cairnsmore” ewes cheese. In recent years we have extended our range to include goats' cheese and organic cows' cheeses. The flavours include smoked, green peppercorns, and natural rind. Cairnsmore Cow's cheese is a hard pressed cheese and matured for at least 5 months.  In the summer months we make fresh ricotta from the whey.

In 2015 we have launched “Millairies” – a semi -hard cheese rinded in our cheesegalloway.jpg cellar under the mill.  It is made with cows' and ewes' milk.

Next year we will be starting to milk our own organic Friesian cows to help expand the business for the next generation. We are delighted to have just won “Dairy Provider 2015” at the Food Awards Scotland 2015.”

They also have a lovely onsite shop, EWE TO YOU, with sheep related crafts - sheepskin rugs, fleeces and smaller gift items, plus local foodie items...and of course a wonderful cheese counter with their own cheeses!

A delicious range of cheeses from this new enterprise at Crocketford. This is a lovely story - Emma has returned to her homeland and is working on becoming an artisan cheesemaker. Her family has a herd of pure Ayrshires and all the cheeses are made using the milk from Mark's Ayrshire herd at Crofthead Dairy. Currently the cheeses themselves are hand made for her at the highly respected award-winning Appleby's in Cumbria, now in their third generation. Emma goes there every week and is learning the craft.

They are producing four cheeses, all with character and top notch: Creamy Brie - smooth and rich with a lovely depth of flavour. Smoked Brie - pleasantly delicate, the smoking does not overwhelm the high quality Brie. Scottish Blue - creamy with a lovely distinctive tang. Vintage Cheddar - mellow and with the good long aftertaste you hope for in a high quality cheese.

This young family gives me hope! An artisan micro milk business.

An enthusiastic dairy farmer who has reduced his head of cows and replaced with the Ayrshire breed, local to the area. Following in the footsteps of Rabbie Burns who farmed Ayrshires within a stone throw, Bryce has recognised the need to add value to his milk by producing on farm, non homogenized, local milk.

His milk has already caught the eye of local residents, businesses, and a new cheesemaker starting imminently.

They also have a farm shop and I cant wait to visit very soon and update this entry.

Photo to follow...in the meantime my pic of Ayrshires elsewhere

Mrs McMyn's hens must thank their lucky feathers that they can roam freely over this idyllic spot off the Solway Coast. On this organic farm the family includes their brood of Lohmann hens, a herd of suckler cows, a flock of sheep and even two alpacas who watch over the hens!
